There's been a virtual explosion of social networking web sites previously few years. Even the players like Google, Yahoo and MSN are receiving into it.

With so much interest in how social networks work, one begins to wonder when there is advertising potential within these social networks?

I have been watching social media for quite a while now. In-fact I'm a part of numerous social networking websites including https://www.linkedin.com and http://www.myspace.com/ simply to name two.

I joined partly because I wished to see what they were, but more to the point to see what influence social networking would have on SEM in the coming years.

I have been a member of numerous services for some time and the reach these sites have is incredible.

For example, from my LinkedIn network of seven people I have an extended network of over 12,600 people.

That is amazing - I am only a click or two away from close to 13,000 other folks who share my related interests ranging from what I like to watch o-n TV to work I can give for them.

Through their connections and my connections, I'm connected to people starting from the American Cancer Society, to Sun Microsystems to the University of Texas to Google. Tm contains further concerning the purpose of this hypothesis.

But what marketing possibilities are there for Social Networking?

Well, let's have a look at MySpace.

MySpace is one of many prime sites on line today. I-t racked up 9.4 billion page-views in August 2005 (over Google) and new customers are signing up at-a mind-boggling rate of 3.5 million monthly.

MySpace is typical of where todays 18-30 year old visits manage their electronic life. It allows people to post pictures of themselves and their friends, develop a weblog, record their favorite groups, watch and share videos, suggest activities to do and lists a set of people they consider friends. It's on this 'Friends List' where all the possibilities lay.

All thirty million-plus consumers of MySpace have a friends site that lists people that person views their friend. In case you want to be taught further on copyright, we recommend tons of libraries people should consider pursuing. This is a set of people who they're interested in hearing from on an everyday basis, as well as conversing with and about. Once you add somebody as your friend they can send you messages, discuss your pictures, read your blogs, as well as leave messages that you can then share with the others. This is an opportunity for quick feedback about you.

The capacity to add friends to your page is crucial for advertising to MySpace people. According to Courtney Holt, head of new media and strategic marketing at Interscope Records, 'This technology is growing up with out ever seen developed media. 'They do not think in terms of-the album, and they don't think in terms of the TV schedule. They think in terms of TiVo, P2P, AOL, and of-course MySpace.

You can see how this may develop.

Let us say you create a MySpace account to share your service or product. If you have an opinion about English, you will possibly want to check up about the internet. You blog about it and look for the others that could share your interests.

You then invite them to be your friend. Once they turn into a friend you start your 'smooth sell' pitching your solution in their mind.

As they grow to understand it, they start blogging and discussing it. Soon thousands or even thousand of people are referring to you and your product or service.

Don't think this will work?

I want to give a few examples to you. There are lots of bands who've gotten their begin MySpace. By just hosting a few of their music o-nline and blogging about themselves they created a following. Soon they'd document deals and contracts prearranged.

Of course to-use services like MySpace you need to have some thing this marketplace needs. If you do not then you probably shouldn't put an excessive amount of effort in to MySpace.

But that does not mean other social networking opportunities should be overlooked. As I mentioned above, Linked-in is more of a specialist introduction service. If your products or services meets here then by all means investigate it further.

And there are the others too. Companies for example Yahoo!s MyWeb, Flickr, http://del.icio.us and more.

If you have ever wondered what other online possibilities may be out there, consider social media. It could be another great online-marketing channel..
